Timeline: three days before Columbia arrives
On:
The Elliot family, a term that would have seemed strange a few years ago, uncertain a few months ago and now i seemed like an odd moment, Jason pulled a bowl of oatmeal out of the replicator, the coffee appeared a second later. Sehla who was siting at the table attempting too eat her breakfast, Varris raced in from the master bedroom stealing the coffee out of Jason's hand gulping down a large mouthful.
"Sorry...Human coffee is normally very weak, why isn't this one?" She asked
"Espresso roast if it's not brewed right it tastes like ashes, glad you're enjoying that one." Jason said as he turned back to make another one, "So My meeting is about two hours, I'll grab kiddo from daycare after for lunch then some holodeck mayhem, what's your day looking like?"
"Subspace conference call with the Republic liaison, then a thirty minute one with that decorator concerning your house, do you have any preferences on color schemes?" Varris said as she tried to button up her blouse.
"Keep the grey's to the appliances and maybe make sure that the window on the second floor is fixed, I tried before I left Earth but it's likely leaking again." Jason said grabbing the second coffee, "I did send a message too the head of the school in the area they want to include Romulan language if that's okay in her individual studies, I'm okay with it."
"They do individual study on earth?" Varris started "I didn't know earth schools were so different."
"It's a smaller district, few students so they can customize the educational needs, plus it's a twenty minute ride to the ski hills in winter, hiking in summer and camping at any time of year." Jason said.
"The camping thing sounds like fun, is it true there are creatures called bears?" Varris asked grabbing a bowl of fruit from the replicator.
"Bears, Cougars and a few other critters, but they generally don't bother people if you don't leave temptation like food out." Jason said as he shoveled the last of the oatmeal down.
"Papa...." a little voice called out "Are you going to be on the ship all the time?"
Jason was expecting this question, he decided not to lie or down play it "Not all the time, six months out in space, two months home, maybe an extra couple of weeks here and there so we can be a family more, my job has changed some so I can be around more plus I think the idea of you spending all your time on a ship or a space station isn't good, plus you'll get to meet other kids your own age, learn new things and maybe make some friends."
Varris looked over to Jason and decided to support him "Plus I'll be on earth and we can explore some things ourselves ."
Sehla wrapped her small arms around Jason's neck "Okay father..."
Jason stood up, "I have to get going, Commodore Wilks isn't known to be forgiving for people being late." he said as he kissed his wife on the cheek.
"Remember she's on the Daycare on level two of the family decks!" Varris called out as Jason exited their quarters.
Varris stood there as he exited their quarters, she took a spoon full of the fruit salad and contemplated her day, she knew her day paled in comparison too her hubands but she still had her own duties such as they were, she finshed dressing and got ready for her all be it short day, she didn't miss her life from the days before the nova, she hated the Tal'Shiar, the other government agencies that meddled in life in general, now she could do what she wanted and be with the man she loved, her family did have reservations about their relationship but it was shortlived as he proved that they could be a family and Jason had been respectful of some of the old ways he'd also managed to prove that the new era would prove to be sustainable and even beneficial too all. She made one more cup of the coffee Jason preferred in a travel cup and taking the hand of her daughter they left the quarters.
